Mistakes to Avoid in Dissertation





Dissertation writing requires a lot of research and time from topic selection to writing the conclusion.  You must try to avoid the following mistakes in order to write a good dissertation.

1.    Topic Selection

For dissertation, writing it is imperative that you choose a topic, on which research is not done before, or if you could question an argument not done before, or if you could present a new perspective of the same old method. As the word implies “re-search” this means that you are researching the same things with different perspective to give something new and unique to the readers. That’s what the scientist do, research over and over again in order to find weakness and flaws of existing system that’s is how they come up with new methods, techniques, systems and phenomena.

2.    Unfocused and Ambiguous Writing

In dissertation you have to very focused, make sure that your literature review and other parts of the research are not deviated from your topic. Irrelevant content can  reduced the quality of your work, you must try to be clear as possible in order to avoid ambiguity in your writing. Most of the students often exaggerate and write too much detail in order to complete the word count, if you are unable to complete word count discuss it with your supervisor they will definitely facilitate you or reduce your word count limit. But make sure that you do not compromise the quality of your dissertation.

3.    Avoid Grammatical Error

While writing try to avoid grammatical mistakes, if you are weak in grammar do not worry. MS Word offers features for grammar check and phrase check you can use that feature. On the other hand, there is various software, which you can install for a thorough check.  If you are using Google Docs you can install plug ins for browser which you can use for grammar check.

If you are still not satisfied you can get help from your friends or tutor to proof read your dissertation.
 
4.    Avoid referencing mistakes

First, check which referencing style is required for your dissertation, ask your supervisor to provide you referencing style guide or you can check your university portal they must have provided a copy for students to access.

Every single comma or full stop is noticed therefore you must be careful.

5.    Sources of data collection

While doing research make sure that you search in authentic places where you can find authentic and valid data. You can visit your local library or university library, universities give access to various online journals which you can use free of cost. Some of the good online websites can be Google Scholars, Google Books, jStore, Emerald Insight and various online journals can provide you authentic support.
